Purpose: To investigate the optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters predicting the number of intravitreal ranibizumab injection (IVR) needed until the initial resolution of serous retinal detachment (SRD) in diabetic macular edema (DME).
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 17 eyes of 15 patients with center-involved DME treated by IVR for 6 months or more, and evaluated the association between OCT parameters (central subfield [CSF] thickness [mean retinal thickness within the central 1 mm area], SRD height, cystoid macular edema, disrupted external limiting membrane, and hyperreflective foci in the subretinal fluids) and the number of IVR until the SRD resolution in DME.
Results: IVR was performed between one and five times until the initial resolution of SRD. The number of injections positively correlated to preoperative CSF thickness (r=0.538, p=0.026) and the SRD height (r=0.742, p<0.001), but not to logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution visual acuity (VA) and other OCT findings. There were no associations of VA improvement with any OCT parameters at baseline.
Conclusion: Preoperative height of SRD is related to the number of injections until the initial resolution of SRD in DME.
