Purpose: To clarify the clinical features and treatment outcome of patients with retinal vasoproliferative tumors.
Methods: The medical records of 49 eyes in 49 patients diagnosed with retinal vasoproliferative tumors between January 1997 and August 2015 at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Tokyo Medical University Hospital were retrospectively investigated.
Results: The mean age upon initial examination was 47.0 years, and the mean tumor diameter was 3.0 mm. The most common tumor location was the inferotemporal side (35%), followed by the superotemporal (22%), temporal (20%), and inferior (16%) sides. The following complications were noted: intraretinal or subretinal exudation (57%), preretinal membrane (43%), and exudative retinal detachment (29%). Treatment methods included photocoagulation (61%), cryotherapy (37%), and vitrectomy (37%). The mean visual acuity[logarithmic Minimum Angle of Resolution (logMAR) ]of the 41 eyes in 41 patients, who were able to undergo follow-up observation for at least 3 months, was 0.24 at baseline and 0.19 at endpoint. Therefore, no significant difference was observed for visual acuity between the baseline and endpoint. Results indicated that visual acuity outcome is associated with complicating retinal impairment and does not correlate with tumor diameter at baseline.
Conclusion: Optimal treatment needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis because the degree of severity and associated complications upon definitive diagnosis of retinal vasoproliferative tumors are diverse.
