Purpose: To investigate systemic antibiotic use in patients with suspected infectious keratitis referred to university hospitals.
Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective study.
Results: A total of 122 patients (54 from Tohoku University, 20 from Gifu University, and 48 from Gunma University) were enrolled in the study. Systemic use was reported in 32 patients (26%), including those with relatively good visual acuity, and frequent use of broad-spectrum antibiotics was noted.
Conclusions: These results suggested that assessment of the necessity of treatment with systemic antibiotics based on the severity of disease and use of appropriate antibiotics based on the results of testing to identify causative organisms are important.
