Purpose: To identify risk factors for adverse effects of fluorescein angiography (FA) and to establish safety measures.
Methods: Adverse effects observed in patients who underwent FA in the past 4 years were retrospectively investigated.
Results: The incidence of adverse effects in the most recent FA procedures was 3.93% (48/1,220 patients). Nausea and vomiting accounted for 77.08% of the adverse effects. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that a young age (odds ratio per year of age, 0.97) and a history of adverse effects (odds ratio, 15.94) significantly contributed to the development of adverse effects. Antiemetics were prophylactically administered to 28 of 47 patients with a history of nausea or vomiting;however, no significant difference was observed in the prophylactic effect. The one patient who developed anaphylactic shock required tracheal intubation and was difficult to resuscitate because of vomiting a meal consumed before FA.
Conclusions: Complete caution is necessary when performing FA in relatively young patients with a history of adverse effects. To prevent vomiting, prohibiting food intake 4 h before FA and fluid intake 1 h before FA is recommended.
