Purpose: To compare visual acuity (VA) in eyes (n=1,564) after implantation of seven types of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) at a single site from February, 2012 to March, 2020.
Subject and method: Uncorrected and corrected VA were com pared at 5 m, 1 m, 50 cm, and 30 cm at postoperative week one and month 1-3 with extended depth of focus type TECNIS SymfonyⓇ OptiBlueⓇ and its toric (Symfony), n=716; low-add-power segmented type Lentis ComfortⓇ (Lentis Comfort), n=91; trifocal Acrisof IQ PanOptixⓇ single piece and its toric (PanOptix), n=179; bifocal LENTIS Mplus MFⓇ, XⓇ, and its toric (Lentis Mplus), n=203; TECNISⓇ Multifocal ZMB00 (ZMB), n=256; ZLB00, n=80; and ZKB00 (ZKB), n=39.
Results: At postoperative month 1-3, the mean subjective spherical equivalent was -0.24 D to+0.05 D and the mean cylindrical power was -0.35 D to -0.17 D, showing significant differences between some groups (p< 0.0024). For 5-m uncorrected VA, Symfony〔-0.02±0.13 logarithmic minimum angle of resolution (logMAR), mean±standard deviation〕 was significantly better than Lentis Comfort (0.05±0.17 logMAR) (p< 0.001) at postoperative week one; but no significant differences were observed across groups at postoperative month 1-3. For 5-m corrected VA, Symfony (-0.09±0.07 logMAR) was significantly better than PanOptix and Lentis Mplus at postoperative week one (p< 0.001). For 1-m uncorrected and corrected VA, Symfony and Lentis Comfort were significantly better than Lentis Mplus and ZMB at postoperative week one and month 1-3 (p< 0.001). For 50-cm uncorrected VA, Symfony, Lentis Comfort, and PanOptix were significantly better than bifocal IOL (except ZKB) at postoperative week one (p< 0.001). For 30-cm uncorrected and corrected VA, PanOptix and bifocal IOL were significantly better than Symfony at almost all time points (p< 0.001). At postoperative month 1-3, postoperative refraction values in all groups became hypermetropic (+0.01-+0.20 D) relative to the target refraction value.
Conclusion: VA was good with Symfony and Lentis Comfort at 5 m, 1 m, and 50 cm; PanOptix at all 4 distances; and 4 types of bifocal IOL at 5 m and 30 cm.
